A Message from our Booster President
Dear fellow parents and boosters,
It's that time of year again where we are asking for support of Miller Park fundraising. It's also that time of year where we as busy people think about all of the commitments and obligations we have, as well as the fun and other things we really want to do, and we're mentally evaluating where fundraising for a band program falls in that schedule. Like you may do, I often think that it's time to just let someone else do it. After all, 5 of my 6 kids have now gone through school and band and I've supported them. When I look at the operational budget of our bands and see that it takes about $300 per student to cover the buses, instructors, programs, food, instruments, music, etc. that our directors ask for, it's tempting to think that writing a check would get me off the hook and off to something else.
Those same questions have been felt by boosters in organizations everywhere. In some cases, the organizations simply deferred to a fees-based program and effectively disbanded the parent/booster fundraising element. Interestingly, these programs (especially band programs and some sports organizations) quickly noticed a side effect - disconnect. It seems that one of the outcomes of strong group fundraising is a more active, encouraging, and inspiring parent/booster organization. These "connected" parents/boosters are more encouraging to their band students to achieve success and have fun. They are more engaged to help with chaperoning and the other non-monetary help that directors have to depend on to operate their programs. And - the students themselves are inspired to give their best when seeing the similar commitment of those they look up to. These programs were just more successful all-around and ones that had eliminated the fundraising elements soon reversed course. You see, while the money is important, organizations like the Wauwatosa East Red Raiders find that it's your involvement that is fundamental to their success.
I encourage you to be involved, connected and to inspire our band programs. Sure, working Miller Park games is another commitment on your (and my) busy schedules, but I think it's worth it to the students we all support. Please take the time now to register your commitment for the 2018 season.
Many thanks to all of you who support my students and I hope to see and work with you this year!
